The route beings at the Sett Valley Trail Car park in the center of Hayfield (SK035869). Head off down the Sett Valley Trail. Straight across the lane at Corssing cottage, then after a couple of hundred yards look out for a track up to your left. If you miss it and reach the road, don't worry, just turn left and head up to the main road Head up the steep track at the side of the pub (SK023868), continuing straight on at the gate as the road veers left downhill. After about 400 yards (SK032859), take the left hand fork as the path follows the fence downhill, curving ever leftwards. On reaching the farm, go round the stables into the courtyard and follow the track. Go straight across at the main road and up a metalled track for about 50 yards (SK039865). Turn right and climb the hill until reaching a Bridleway (SK050853) branching off to the left. Follow this until reaching a Path (SK053862) off to the left. Follow the path along a wall, through a gate into a fielk and through another gate, then descend (makes it sound easy, doesn't it?). As you approach the bottom, the trail forks. Following the right hand forl and doubl back to the righ would take you up to Jacob's ladder, so stay left, climibg slighty and passing through a gate to descend yet further. You;ll end up at the side of the river (SK044866). Here, you need to take the footbridge across and climb to the road, turning right (straight on, almost) at the top. Continue down the road until you reach the Gates (SK051876) at the water board place. You should be able to go through (I've never seen them locked), but if not then follow the path to the right and come round and back across the bridelway in front of the dam. You've now got a steep climb! Up the cobbles, then as they finish/a> (SK054882), double back on yourself and continue climbing. At the top, take the wide double track bearing away to the right (over a bridge). It's signposted as a footpath at this end, but the other end confirms that it's a bridleway as marked on the map. Couple of tricky sections, but I'll let you discover then yourself. At the end of the track (SK034894) across the moor, you can cut the ride short by turning left and cutting bacjk to Hayfield on the road. For the full eperience, turn right and ascend, taking the first left (SK032902) off the main road (not counting famr track). Continue for about half a maile then turn left off that road (SK024909), and immediately left again. After about 100 yards you can throw your bikes over the wall (it's a bridleway on the map I have at home). or folow the wall round the outside and take the track on the left. Take the bridleway (SK021900) down to Matley Moor, cutting straight through at the Gate (SK025889). Follow signs directing you foward and right to climb up to the path visible leading up to Past Lantern Pike (SK023874). Descend here, watching out for the road half way down, and aso watching out for the nicely wheel-sized waterbars, and of course the obligatory loose surface :o). At the bottom, turn left (Ellen's cafe here - nice!), and left onto the Sett Valley Trail (SK019869) and back to the car park.
